I was relishing in the fact that that our image (particularly mine, because I am the main subject shown in the picture) was used for their promotional internet ads as shown above. It was quite flattering and indeed it was an honor. But there are unethical issues which I firmly believe involved. First is we weren't asked if it was okay. The owner of the picture claimed sole rights to the image "regardless of the subject". And we were assured it wasn't considered an endorsement". In a way it is okay but the cons outweigh the pros.

Imagine someone candidly takes your picture while you were taking a dip in the pool. it was a great picture, awesomely taken, the lighting was perfect, the composition was awesome. Something you'd like to make as your Face Book profile picture. Or something you'd like to print out and hang on your living room. The next day you go to you favorite coffee shop and there is your beautiful picture on their promotional planner. I reckon you will jump up with excitement and your new found fame as a model, your joy will overflowing, and you're excited to show it to your friends... but you stop and think about it. Though you dont own the picture, you were still the subject. Though you don't own the copyright of the picture, it's your image that was used. Your image which can be subject to public scrutiny, scorn, embarrassment and humiliation. What if someone out in your school or office makes fun of you? Does the photographer claim the damage? Does the owner of the copyright suffer? No. And what makes it worse, is that they didn't think of asking for your permission before they put you up to the public's eyes. It's your privacy which was invaded, and your image abused.

Another con is that why didnt they bother asking for your permission? Why not use the image of someone famous like Manny Pacquiao or some famous icon? The answer is simple. They will get sued because they are "SOMEBODYs". So, in direct implication, they can do that to me and others like me (REGARDLESS of the subject), because they don't give enough "regard" to the subject! In other words, the subject is not worth asking permission from because they are considered as nobodys. I can hear a loud "I didn't say that, you did. and that was never my intention, it is solely your own interpretation of the matter..." Well, however way you look at it, that is the interpretation of it. Ask a common person. Ask anyone in fact.

That is also considered an insult to anyone's humanity and pride. We can actually ask damages from that. But, its okay. I believe the picture wasn't badly criticized, and was even praised. But again, my point is why is this incident allowed? Somebody was paid to do that job. Somebody made money out of it. And however way you look at it, I was used for their benefit. Its really an unethical work practice.

I can say a million other things, but being a Christian, I'd rather not. I was only ticked off by them initially ignoring my queries, and they took 4 days to respond, only when I was getting really upset. So much for customer service. By the way, I have been a SMART Gold Subscriber for 7 years. I have issues with their service but that's another topic for another day.

These types of disrespect for humanity are not supposed to continue, and the notion that anyone can use your image/picture and claim rights to it "regardless of the subject" is really an insult and a degradation of one's dignity. A simple "Sorry, I wont do it again, and I'll take the picture out" is really not enough. My image was used already, the damage has been done and someone benefited from this already. We really must be careful and not take too much liberty in our liberties.

High End Custom Made String Performances for Your Events

BACKGROUND:

We are all UP College of Music Graduates, and are now presently members of professional orchestras in the Philippines. We regularly perform symphonic and classical pieces with foreign artists, as part of our musical discipline and profession. We decided to form our own smaller group apart from our regular orchestra jobs (and I called it The Manila String Machine, since I wanted our group to produce different kinds of music, from classical to rock, using STRINGED instruments), and create an edge here in the Philippines by arranging music specially for the string quartet/ensemble. A standard string quartet is composed of two violins, a viola and a cello.

Aside from performing classical pieces, we love playing standards, swing-type of music, rock, pop, and other genres! We choose what our clients want to us to play (of course if it is possible), like for example we played the Star Wars theme, for the wedding of host/model Issa Litton-Garrido (but we had to add musicians since playing a piece for orchestra required at least 70 musicians, we were able to condense the piece for just 10). We can also"jam" with artists like when we accompanied Radha of Kulay in Ryan and Patch Singson's wedding in Vigan. Very recently, we played for the world renowned fashion designer Kate Torralba for Paper Dolls, Piolo Pascual's Greenbelt Concert and Mr Richard Poon's first major concert at the Meralco Theater and his second concert at Zirkoh. NU107 has invited us as guests in their radio programs as we shared the "new" sound of our string quartet to a rock audience. SM supermalls has also invited us to "tour" their malls performing our unique sound. Among a multitude of collaborations are, we were asked to play and record for Urbandub's Live Internet Concert, Up Dharma Down's first single "June", a few songs in Regine Velasquez' album, and Ely Buendia also asked us to play for his upcoming album. Members of our group also played with David Benoit, Lea Salonga and even the Tenor Andrea Bocelli in his Asian tour.

RATES AND FEES

For a whole event (example: Wedding and Reception, Company events, birthdays, parties, etc.) we charge a standard fee (manila rate) of Php18K, andPhp2,000 per piece (that we will arrange) requested that is not on our list. For outside of Manila ( including provinces), our basic take home pay is Php36K for the quartet. That doesn't include transport (gas, toll, airfare, bus fare) and food/accommodations if necessary. Please also know we can still negotiate if necessary. This basically covers the whole event, we'll be there an hour early, and we can play for an agreed time. But we normally do 3 sets of 45 mins each.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

About our technical requirements, we only need four microphones on four boom stands, ample space and lighting, four chairs, and a monitor speaker! To accomplish this, you need to hire a sound provider, depending on your venue size, number of guests, etc. since all these factors would affect the quality of music, and also the audibility of the requested songs. The sound provider can make or break your event ambiance, so I encourage you to invest also on that. You dont want microphone feed back, or your video presentation not to work, or mics that dont work, etc. These destroy the flow of the program, so again, I implore you to hire a good sound company. I know some who are cheap but really good. However I need to know alot of details from you before we proceed with such.

Our edge is our professionalism, our friendly service, and exquisite music. We are sort of the Vitamin String Quartet of the Philippines. We recently did a tribute to The Cure, Switchfoot, Coldplay, Eraserheads, Metallica, etc. We're planning to do arrangements for Bamboo, Rivermaya, RnB songs, and also to start working on Christian Music by Hillsongs. We arrange the music ourselves and we are very very easy to work with. We can adjust to alot of working conditions, we eat anything, and we can work with other artists easily. Aside from that, we have a singer/guitarist whom we can work with if you choose to add vocals to your event, the cost of adding a singer/guitarist is just Php4,000.

If you need REAL stringed instruments for your recording needs, we can provide that service! If your recordings are to be done in a professional studio, a single musician can be hired for Php3k/song. Naturally, two musicians would be Php 6k/song, and so on and so forth.

Music must be provided specially arranged for the instrument requirements. We offer music arranging too, at Php2k per song.

HOWEVER, we can provide the recording studio service! Just give us the audio, and we'll LAYER it with the string accompaniment here at our home studio, at the same price! This cuts your recording costs so try our service!!!

Concerts and Public Performances

Concerts with live string orchestra (or quartet) accompaniment gives the event a more classic touch, and also elevates the level of aesthetics.

Performance Package is at a standard classical musician rate in metro manila. Out of town rates are also negotiable, considering the accommodations, transport, etc. Rehearsal rates are Php1,500 per rehearsal ( rehearsal rates apply for pre-performance rehearsal "sound check")
* for a string quartet. FOUR MUSICIANS ONLY.

Special arrangement for quartets should be provided by the client, but we offer an arranging service of Php2k per song.

Live string accompaniment not only satisfies your musical ear, but the aesthetic value as all the guests will see string musicians on stage providing the beautiful music which they hear.

Live string music accompanies the introductions to speakers, presentors, etc. and also provide music for the meal time (breakfast, lunch, or dinner)

International Rates and Guidelines

I am so blessed to have this company survive these most economically difficult times. The Lord has indeed given this small company a steady flow of clients and has somehow penetrated the foreign market! Its just too bad that I wasnt prepared to answer the inquiries with such important questions like: how much our international rates were! I was hoping my friends could help me with this but maybe the next time I had a foreign client inquire I had to know these basic facts before hand. It just completely went off my mind that the company is advertised here on my blog, and therefore all the world can access it!

But just for a better idea, I hope my colleagues would agree, we would charge an international fee PER PERSON of Php10k/day, or US$200/day, spent abroad (including day of departure from Manila, Philippines to day of arrival back at manila), minus one day for touring*. So for a quartet, four musicians, Php40k/day or US$800/day. For three days that would mean US$2,400, plus airfare, accommodations, food, fees and taxes, FOR THE WHOLE QUARTET!

Airfare, Visas, Airport fees, taxes, etc. would be shouldered by the Client. Board and lodging (hotel accommodations), and transportation to and from rehearsal/performance venues would also be shouldered by the client.

A day means three hours of work (rehearsal or performance). We would have to charge for overtime which means an additional $40 per hour or a fraction thereof in excess of three (3) hours.

NOW, hold your horses, before anything else, we can negotiate a package "Take Home Pay" of $500, for up to five days (3days rehearsal, 1day performance, 1 day rest and recreation)

*Now, the group would require an extra day at the place for sight seeing and R and R (rest and recreation), but the client wouldn't need to shoulder that, unless of course they want to!!!! That day of course is not considered as working day, and we need not be paid.

MSM and Oakley

The Manila String Machine recently worked with the Oakley Wherever O May Roam launching last August 1, 2008. It gave our company a boost because a lot of media people were present and we were asked to play Led Zeppelin, Metallica, and U2 music specially arranged for string quartet. It was a huge success despite the downpour of rain, and intense humidity, we were able to (by God's amazing grace) perform top quality ROCK music.

Performing for numerous Corporate Functions and Events is what I regard as MSM's forte. We had more of the corporate stuff compared to our wedding gigs. Weddings are also our specialty since we began doing that, and have been around long enough to be masters of the event. I am proud to announce though that MSM is finally finding it's place in the music providing service arena, and is quickly gaining a reputation as a high-end musical group.

A Musical Journey

Theodore Philip B. Amper started out his musical adventure when he was very young singing at his local church in the kids' choir. He often performs duets with his sister and performs with the whole family at church and family gatherings,with the name: Amper Family Singers...patterned after the Sound of Music's: Trapp Family Singers He later did kid's commercials with 14K in MILO, Great Taste Milk, Sustagen, etc..

In High School, he decided to learn the guitar so he can accompany himself and his brother( who taught him) when they sing at reunions. Joining the Manila Science High School Glee Club, he honed his singing skills and started a rock alternative band to improve his guitar playing and over-all band(group) dynamics. By fourth Year High School, he joined in a guitar playing contest bagging the first prize. That same year, he joined his church's music team as guitar player. Moving on to the bass guitar, he found out that the bass was a lot more apt for his interests and discovered a deep fondness in it's capabilities. Joining various bands in college such as Broken, and Emmanuel and working closely with a lot of other church bands, he learned other skills as drums and song writing, singing and connecting with the audience.

In college, after a frustrating 3-yr bout in his course in The University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City in BS Electrical Engineering, he shifted to the UP college of Music to take up another peculiar instrument: the violoncello. Here, he learned that music isnt just a hobby... its science, philosophy, skill and art all put together. Interestingly enough, this is the only time he actually started reading music, playing piano and learning about the great music masters. By this time, he also spent time with the State Varsity Christian Fellowship, where he further developed his relationship with the Lord and also in knowing God more theologically, and also some song writing skills. By seventeen years old he got to lead the church Worship Team, as worship leader/musical director and guitarist. College life was the turning point of his life, because this was the time God turned his heart toward Him. Music was now only a peripheral, vocational thing, God was the main desire of his heart.

By the age of 23, Ted started playing with the Meschianza String Quartet, and joined the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra as cellist as he sought to to bring glory to God in this line of work. Presently he is employed as a cellist for the prestigious FILharmoniKA, led by Gerard Salonga, an orchestra devoted to recording for media, but has delved into major symphonic works and accompanying a growing number of international and local artists. Besides performing with his multiple bands, playing with different chamber groups, doing gigs, studying cello and teaching music, he eventually developed his skills in composing, recording and arranging music for their church.

Lately, Ted does recordings and performances with different local pop-rock bands (Urbandub, Mojofly, UP Dharma Down, Stonefree, Ely Buendia, 6 cycle mind, etc.),local solo artists (regine velasquez, lani misalucha, lea salonga, gary valenciano, Cecil Licad, Oscar Yatco etc.etc.) and performs with international artists. Included in this roster is Mr. Andrea Bocelli himself and numerous others as allowed by his involvement with the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has recently finished his diploma in the UP college of Music, DCPMA Cello, and is now pursuing a career in Gospel Music recordings and songwriting. Aside from that, he has formed a music service providing company called the Manila String Machine, which hosts a wide roster of events and clientele. He partners with his college friends and colleagues to saturate the music market with their performances. He regularly performs with the Quatro Staggioni String Quartet.

At present, he has written more than 80 well-loved songs encompassing a wide range of genres and styles for the Body of Christ. He works part time for his church at Christ's Way Community as Music Director, where he spends most of his time training musicians, leading worship, small group Bible Studies, and free music lessons to high school students at Santolan High School.

He and his lovely wife Rose live in Antipolo City where they plan to raise kids in the near future.

My Dreams and Hopes

My dream for this young company is very big. I want to do international contracts with artists around the world, gain a name for it, and yes, earn BIG. But behind those goals are reasons that have been burning inside me since I began as a young musician.

I started out late in playing cello and reading literature about music. I am indeed almost an illiterate. I know some, but I the little I know is even considered elementary, and trivial. I will work hard to be better, however, I must accept the fact that I may not become a world-famous cellist, whose talents and skills the world will applaud on. But, I can do better. I can focus on people's lives, people's welfare and interests, my country's honor, my school's pride, my family's reputation, and most of all, my God's pleasure. And that, I CAN do.

With that said, I dream that Filipino Musicians could gain a reputation in the world as world-class. Im not saying we are not, but we can still do better. I want another spot for our nation in the world wide race for excellence. Through this small company, I would like to reach a market that targets recordings. And since labor costs are a lot cheaper here, I could use that as an edge in the competition, until such a time other international recording artists lower their prices, then we could compete at their rates.

Another dream is simply about performing worship songs in a new perspective. Most worship songs today focus on the rhythm section of the orchestra, in other words, the band! But my goal is to incorporate the strings section once again to most church concerts. Aesthetically it is superior, and above all, LIVE is the best!

My dreams are simple, yet attainable. May God bless this endeavor with His presence and guidance. By the way, we're doing another big thing next week!

THE MANILA STRING MACHINE GENERAL AGREEMENT

THE MANILA STRING MACHINE GENERAL AGREEMENT

1. The Manila String Machine (MSM) will perform at _____(location)_____ on ___(date)___ for the _____(event)_____.

2. MSM will be composed of the following instruments:
a.

3. MSM will arrive 1 hour, or at the latest, 30 minutes before the event.

4. MSM will provide the following equipment:
a. music stands
b. music pieces
c. our instruments (violins, viola and cello)

5. MSM will be dressed in any of the following attire:
a. Barong Tagalog
b. tuxedo
c. long-sleeved shirts (tie optional)
d. suits

6. MSM will play for a maximum of 3 hours. The client can decide to divide the three hours within the span of the event.(i.e. 45 mins ceremony, 30 mins cocktails, 1 hour dinner, 15 mins reception program)

7. MSM requires a program hard copy, or a program coordinator to assist us in the performance cues.

8. MSM assures the client that they will perform to the highest level of discipline and musicality possible.

9. MSM can play a wide range of repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic music, art and folk music, Broadway tunes, Movie Themes, Standards, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Beatles, U2, and up-to date modern popular songs). We also have selections of original Filipino Music available. MSM and the client will discuss the musical choices at a later date.

10. MSM does not take requests on the spot. If there are requests, we would only be able to play them if we have a piece available, specially arranged for the String Quartet.

11. MSM will request for breaks in between sets.

For the CLIENT:
1. The client will pay a total of _____________________ (Php_______) to MSM for rendered services.

2. The client is required to place a 25% non-refundable down payment at the time of booking/signing of contract. MSM is hereby considered "booked" only when the down payment is paid. This is deductible from the total contract price.

3. The balance must be paid anytime before the program ends. MSM prefers cash for this final payment. If you will pay with a check, please deposit a week before the event to this account:

4. If the client requires special pieces, you must provide the pieces for us to play, arranged for a string ensemble. If there is no piece provided, you can ask us to arrange your special songs at Php2,000 per piece.**

5. If the client wishes for rehearsals and the like, these must be scheduled, and a rehearsal fee is required.

6. At the event, the client will provide ample space and ample lighting for the MSM to see their pieces, plus the following:
a. 4 armless chairs
b. 4 condenser microphones on separate boom stands
c. a sound system to amplify the sound sufficiently, depending on the venue and number of guests.

d. ample lighting and ample space (3 x 2 meters)

7. The client will provide food and drinks for MSM.

8. The client will provide parking passes, a holding room, or a place for the quartet to retreat and rest in between sets.

9. If the event is located outside Metro Manila, the talent fee is at Php8,000 per musician, plus travel expenses (i.e. toll, gas, parking). But this is negotiable.

10. The client must provide a map and directions to the venue/s (if separate i.e. ceremony, reception, etc.).

The Manila String Machine puts very high regard to punctuality, therefore we always arrive 1 hour or at the latest, 30mins before the event. However in cases such as force majeur or unforeseen circumstances (e.g. non-moving traffic due to an accident on the road, military, political or people demonstrations, etc) and it causes the group to come late or is unable to arrive, please know that we are sincerely sorry for the delay, but it is beyond our control and we regret the incident. However, the service fee shall not be waived, and if the group arrives late (again, in extremely rare cases), the group shall be paid the equivalent amount for the service rendered. For example, reception only (manila- 12k, out of town- 20k), and this will also apply for non- wedding events.
